Strategic IT management presupposes free access to information on the individual structures, relationships, and technical details of relevant IT components. The quality of a quick decision relies on how reliable, complete, and up-to-date the accessible information is.
Configuration management allows for the management of infrastructure data and its individual properties in a central
configuration management database (CMDB). The data is maintained in a structured form based on configuration items. It is collected and analyzed from a wide variety of sources and IT systems. The underlying concept strictly follows the guidelines of the IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL).
A solution that is able to do all of this needs to guarantee comparability – automatically if possible – which is achieved by normalizing the incoming data.
