REALTECH and Novell release updated study: "The Trend From Unix to Linux in SAP Data Centers"

The update of last year's study focuses on the architectural aspects of SAP landscapes

Walldorf, August 12, 2009 — REALTECH and Novell release new trend study on the "Trend from UNIX to Linux in SAP Data Centers". The study is an update of last year's findings.

The 2008 survey had shown that more than two out of three SAP migrations to Linux are now coming from UNIX. In 2008, the percentage of discontinued UNIX flavors (e.g. Tru64, Reliant) dropped to roughly 5%. The UNIX flavors that suffered the greatest losses were HP-UX (40.9%) and AIX (18.2%).

The study shows where the trend is going in 2009 and how it differs from last year's trend. It focuses on architectures, CPUs, psychological motivations for migrating to Linux. The study documents how the availability and reliability of the x64 architecture continues to drive the trend towards Linux. The findings clearly demonstrate how the availability and reliability of the x64 architecture continues to drive the trend towards Linux.

The study answers the question of whether there is or will be a very best x64 architecture for SAP on Linux and examines the role of "Green IT" and "Virtualization" in the decision to migrate to Linux. The study's surveys found a strong connection between CPU architectures and the successful implementation of Green IT. x64 architectures hold the top spots in two out of three evaluation criteria, and clearly dominate the top 10 in any green IT respect.

In the study, REALTECH identifies the vendors that deliver the best features and the best support for virtualization technologies. REALTECH also closely examines the reasons that speak in favor of Linux as an operating system for companies using virtualization technologies.

The study is available as a white paper. Go to SAP on Linux subpage for a free download.
