Database migration prepares DB Breweries for E commerce
DB Breweries has successfully migrated its core SAP application from an Informix Database to Microsoft’s SQL Server, thanks to a team effort of in-house expertise and certified professionals from realTech Ltd.
“We wanted to move away from being a lonely Informix/NT site on SAP and we wanted to ensure that the company’s core application was totally based on an industry standard database,” says DB Breweries IS Manager, Herman van Krieken. “It was essential to reduce our risks as we moved into the new round of applications required to support our business requirements.”
Key to the success of the migration was the selection of realTech Ltd as the technical solutions provider. RealTech provided the required certified professional people to perform the migrations and rise to the challenge.
Tim Woolfield, Managing Director of realTech commented that database migrations were not common. “The customer has to make a significant investment to move from one database to another, and when you are massaging the company’s core database you have to be particularly careful at every stage of the project.
“We were pleased to deliver the technical expertise to successfully implement this project.” Performance and space utilisation have improved noticeably under the SQL Server according to Herman van Krieken.
“We now have confidence that we have the quality foundations from a technical perspective to move forward. With the assistance of realTech and members of our own in house team we have bought this project in ahead of time and under budget,” he said.

Microsoft prefers realTech
U.S. subsidiaries of the SAP R/3 technical consulting specialist and Microsoft become R/3 installation partners for Windows 2000 and SQL Server – joint sales and marketing activities planned.
realTech Inc. and Microsoft have signed a contract that gives the Walldorf-based technical consulting provider for SAP R/3 the status of "preferred Microsoft partner for SAP installations". Based on the agreement between the Redmond-based company and realTech's U.S. subsidiaries, Microsoft will refer customers to the Walldorf-based software house for SAP R/3 installations under Windows NT with the SQL Server. This is valid for new installations as well as for database and/or operating system migrations.
realTech Inc. will assign 5 consultants to work on Microsoft customer projects in the U.S. Both companies will develop joint sales and marketing activities. For example, Microsoft will market the concept internally. "This agreement boosts our position in the North American consulting market," says an enthusiastic Jack van Dijk, new Vice President of Sales & Marketing at realTech in the U.S. Jack also worked on developing the initial concept. "Microsoft customers now have access to the best possible SAP R/3 consulting and support during their implementations."

Revenue increases ten-fold in ten years
realTech AG subsidiary DB-Online looks back on ten successful years of business – The database management and SAP R/3 specialist is looking at database-enabled eCommerce solutions.
In its 10th year, DB-Online, the database and data communication systems company, can look back at a 10- fold increase in revenue: in the 10 years since its founding, DB-Online’s revenue has increased ten-fold to 8 million Deutsche Mark. The company that Doris and Gerhard Schaefer started in April 1990 with 6 employees now employs 36 people who focus on database management – mainly Oracle – and SAP R/3. The software house put its database management knowledge into DUO, a solution that not only makes system administrators' tasks easier but also provides them with the knowledge to solve complex issues. In addition to other large international companies, SAP AG was so impressed by DUO that DB-Online was asked to actively participate in the development of SAPDBA, the R/3 system administration tool.
In the summer of 1999, DB-online was acquired by realTech AG. This provided the company with an even better opportunity to work on large international projects. "DB-Online’s products will perfectly complement realTech AG's portfolio," said Markus Adam, member of realTech AG's board of directors, at the time of the acquisition.
The company is currently expanding and, with its eCommerce activities, focusing on new markets. In addition, DB-Online will increase its cooperation with SAP and develop the JAVA-based database management solution DUO/2000 that will work in conjunction with SAPDBA.
